Messing About In Boats
SMALL GALLERY. 18 Dec 2009 - 18 Jan 2010
In the genre of the Waiheke Community Art Gallery's previous stunning Christmas exhibitions like Beach and Bather, and the A-Z of Animals, we have created for Christmas 2009 a new exhibition titled "Messing About In Boats" This exhibition includes a diverse range of work, from paintings to sculpture and installation. Wonderful old photos from the collection of the Maritime Museum look back at some of the old ferries that plied their trade between Auckland and Waiheke. Capt. James Cook's early map making and cartography are wonderfully depicted as painting on dinghy strakes by Auckland artist Clyde Scott, while old oars retrieved from a seaside cottage have been magically transformed by local Waiheke artists. The exhibition also includes an installation of old bathing suits, by Rose McLeod, who has been resident in the gallery's studio ro the past few months. Their range of colours and nuances reflect the island's beach culture. Hannah Kidd's wonderful sculpture "Happy Camper" is a feature of the exhibition, also "Kith and Kin' a sculpture in wood by Tanya Blong. Paintings complementing the exhibition are by Jane Zusters, Jennifer Town, Nikki Apse and Matthew Muir. Other sculptural works are by Stephen Mulqueen, Phil Newbury, Nigel Scanlon, Leigh Brogan, Penny Ericson and John Oxborough. The will be many other works to enjoy so don't miss this wonderful summer exhibition!
